About Juravinski Hospital

The Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre (JHCC) serves a population of more than 2.3 million people and offers a diverse set of patient care services. It is also home to one of the largest and most comprehensive Regional Cancer Programs in Ontario.

Need for Redevelopment

Constructed in 1917, the Juravinski Hospital inpatient facility has grown outdated and poses significant challenges for staff to provide care and can cause discomfort for patients receiving care.

In 2012, the central and east wing of the hospital underwent renovations to better serve patients in need of the Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging, Surgery and Oncology. However, that redevelopment project did not include a significant portion of the hospital, which continues to cause significant challenges for patients and the workforce to date.

Upcoming redevelopment efforts are being focused on patient areas that have not been updated since the mid-1900s, and making renovations to the emergency department, diagnostic imaging and surgical areas to enhance patient care and create needed space for technology.

The Project

The redevelopment of the Juravinski Hospital is the single-largest health infrastructure investment in HHS’ history and will also make JH the largest acute inpatient hospital in our region.

Construction will take place as we begin a phased demolition of the four oldest wings of the hospital, and build new, modern patient care areas. The modernized facility will result in an increased footprint of almost 70 per cent, and will feature:

All beds will move to single-patient rooms
417 newly constructed beds; 170 net new beds (total of 534)
Inpatient units with anticipated bed growth include Medicine, Critical Care, Cancer Care, Community Surgical Care and Inpatient Rehabilitation
Hallways and common areas will be larger as well to meet current accessibility standards.
