Nursing Career Pathway at HHS

At HHS, we offer a comprehensive development program for nurses at any stage in their career which includes a clear pathway from nursing student to specialized care units and leadership opportunities.

Students & New Graduates

Student Placements: As one of Canada’s largest teaching hospitals with affiliations with McMaster University & Mohawk College, we offer students placements across our clinical programs.

Clinical Extern Program: This program offers nursing students the opportunity to gain clinical experience at the hospital and supports the transition to a regulated nursing role.

New Graduate Guarantee (NGG) Program: Supporting newly graduated RNs & RPNs with a robust orientation (transition to practice) that can lead to full-time employment opportunities. This program is also available to IENs.

Internationally Educated Nurses

International Educated Nurses (IEN): This program provides IENs from pre-hire, through orientation, to clinical integration, a continuum of clinical and communication support including clinical assessment, clinical skills development, problem solving, and managing conflict in a hospital setting and workplace exposure opportunities. Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) program: SPEP is a partnership program between the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), Ontario Health and CNO approved organizations. The program offers applicants the option to complete a supervised practice experience in Ontario to demonstrate current nursing knowledge, skill and judgement and language proficiency skills. HHS is participating in the program, giving applicants an opportunity to meet the following requirements to enter practice as a nurse: Evidence of Practice, or Evidence of Practice and Language Proficiency.

Growth & Development

Critical Practice Orientation: An orientation provided to RNs and RPNs new to the Emergency, Intensive Care and Coronary care departments within the Perioperative Program and selected Step Down units, Heart Investigation, Burn Trauma and Cardiology Inpatient Units.

Workshops & Certificates: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Life Support (BLS), Central Vascular Access Device (CVAD), Preceptorship Program and many more.

Training Programs: Our education department offers opportunities for professional development through workshops, unit-specific orientations, in-house certifications and eLearning.

Leadership Opportunities: Hamilton Health Sciences supports leadership opportunities for nurses in a wide range of roles within the unit and across the organization. This incudes:

Professional Development: HHS offers awards, bursaries, and staff development funds to support professional growth and development with many opportunities specifically available for nurses pursuing further studies or educational initiatives.

Funding Opportunities

Community Commitment Program for Nurses (CCPN): HHS has registered nurse, registered practical nurse and nurse practitioner opportunities available as part of the for CCPN made possible through Ontario Health – Health Force Ontario.

Nurses hired under this program are eligible for $25,000 to be paid in installments in exchange for a two-year commitment to HHS.

To be eligible for the CCPN at HHS, a nurse must:

  • Hold a current Certificate of Registration in good standing from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Meet job requirements/qualifications on the HHS job posting, with a minimum of two years recent experience in a similar hospital setting
  • Meet the minimum requirements for one or more of the eligible programs with a full-time (37.5 hours per week) vacancy
  • Resides outside of the province of Ontario or has recently relocated to Ontario
  • Have not been employed as a nurse in Ontario the six months prior to being hired
  • Begin employment no later than March 31, 2024
  • Commit to 24-months of employment at a full-time work schedule offered by the employer
  • Not simultaneously receive funds from the Ministry of Health for the Tuition Support Program for Nurses such as Tuition Support Program for New Nurses, Nursing Graduate Guarantee Initiative etc.
  • This program is only available to new hires who start working at HHS after July 31, 2023
