Diagnostic Imaging

About the Department

The Department of Diagnostic Imaging at Hamilton Health Sciences consists of faculty and radiologists from a network of hospitals and facilities, providing tertiary subspecialty imaging expertise to patients in our region.  The department supports medical imaging education from undergraduate through to postgraduate learners and subspecialty trainees. There are 67 physician members of our department, working in varied subspecialties across multi-modalities: body, cardiothoracic, musculoskeletal, pediatric, breast and women’s imaging, neuroradiology and interventional radiology. There are several teaching hospitals at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS), including McMaster University Medical Centre/McMaster Children’s Hospital, Hamilton General Hospital, Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre and West Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Our affiliation with McMaster University Department of Medical Imaging provides strong educational opportunities for residency training, post-residency fellowships, undergraduate education and electives. There are rewarding opportunities for faculty who are interested in education, clinical excellence, multi-disciplinary team experiences and research. About the Chief - Dr. Karen Finlay

Dr. Finlay is the Chief of Diagnostic Imaging at Hamilton Health Sciences. She completed her residency in Diagnostic Radiology and Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship at McMaster University, where she is now a Professor in the Department of Medical Imaging. Dr. Finlay is a Staff Radiologist at the Juravinski Hospital, with subspecialty interest in musculoskeletal, bone and soft tissue tumour imaging. Dr. Finlay is an experienced leader, serving concurrently as the Associate Chair of Education/Department Education Coordinator for the Department of Medical Imaging, as well as former Residency Program Director for Diagnostic Imaging at McMaster.  She was the inaugural Director for the Clinician Educator AFC Diploma Program at McMaster University. She is a member of various national committees for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Organization and Structure

The Chief is responsible for the oversight of the department.  There are a number of officially recognized Heads of Service in our department at HHS including:

  • Interventional Radiology
  • Body Imaging
  • Neuroradiology
  • Pediatrics Imaging
  • Musculoskeletal Imaging
  • Breast Imaging
  • EPIC Lead

Our governance structure includes the Diagnostic Services Executive, with co-chair position shared between the Chief and the Director of Diagnostic Services at HHS.  The Chief also works closely with the academic Chair of the Department of Medical Imaging at McMaster.
