Uninsured services depend on your insurance coverage. Below are a list of coverage categories you may belong and what your uninsured services include:
Patient with an Ontario Health Card
If you have a valid Ontario health card, OHIP will pay for most of the health care services you receive.
The following services are not covered by OHIP and are the responsibility of the patient:
- Ambulance services
- Preferred accommodations
- Assistive devices – such as crutches, canes, splints, casts, gel wraps
- Cosmetic surgery
- De-listed procedures – such as tattoo removal, repair of benign skin lesions, travel vaccinations
- Chronic care co-payment
- Certain ophthalmology procedures and implants
If you have third party insurance, your insurance plan may cover the costs of some of these services.
Patients Receiving WSIB Benefits
If you were injured at work and your treatment is related to your work injury, your coverage will vary. To get more information about your WSIB coverage and making a claim, please visit WSIB Ontario or the relevant provincial equivalent.
When you arrive at Hamilton Health Sciences, you must provide your WSIB claim number. If you are treated in the Emergency Department for a work-related injury and intend to file a claim with WSIB, you must inform your health care team that this was a work-related injury and complete the WSIB eForm 6. Your employer should also complete the WSIB eForm 7.
Patients With a Health Card From Another Province or Territory
If you have a health card from another province or territory in Canada, most health care services you receive in Ontario will be paid for through a reciprocal agreement between the provinces and territories with the coverage similar to your province. See Patients with an Ontario Health Card for coverage.
When you arrive at Hamilton Health Sciences, you must provide your home address, your provincial or territorial health card and the expiry date of the card.
Patients With Third-Party Insurance
If you have third party insurance coverage, please contact your insurance company for coverage. You will likely be expected to pay for your care and then seek reimbursement from your insurance company.
Patients in the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP)
When you arrive at Hamilton Health Sciences, you must inform the registration clerk you are covered under the Interim Federal Health Program and provide documentation of your valid refugee status.
Please visit their website for more information.
International Patients
If you are a non-resident of Canada, you are considered an international patient. International patients are not covered by OHIP and are expected to pay for the services they receive.
When you arrive at Hamilton Health Sciences, you must inform the registration clerk you are an international patient and you will be expected to provide a deposit for your care.
If you are an international patient with third party insurance, please see Patients with Third-Party Insurance.
Patients with No Health Coverage
If you do not have Ontario or other Canadian provincial or federal health insurance, you are expected to pay for the services your receive.
When you arrive at Hamilton Health Sciences, you must inform the registration clerk you do not have health coverage and you will be expected to provide a deposit for your care.
